The San Diego Chargers are in a great position for the 2012 NFL Draft, as they picked up the New York Giants Pick in the Eli Manning trade from last season's draft. That pick is looking better and better, as the Giants look worse and worse. Depending on what happens to the Giants vs Dallas in the final week, the Chargers may be getting a top notch player in the front end of the first round. A top 10 pick is likely, but a top 5 or 6 is possible. Read this 2012 NFL draft guide for more info about the top online sport books like Betonline.com sportsbook.
San Diego is sitting pretty, as this team has really matured in 2005, and has lots of reason to be optimistic about about both the playoffs and 2006. First off, the team has depth at quarterback, something that has to please Marty Schottenheimer. Drew Brees has really developed into a capable general on the field. Brees is a perfect model of how to develop a QB in the NFL. It took 4 seasons, for the man to really put his stamp on this team, and he was given the benefit of a veteran like Doug Flutie for the duration of that period. It was inpatients, or rather uncertainty over Brees that prompted the team to grab Philip Rivers last year in a draft day trade. But now the ream is sitting on a developed young QB in Brees, and an up and comer in Rivers. Mix in the best running back in the game today with LaDainian Tomlinson, and you have a very potent, young offensive group to build around. I also have an article on the 2012 Dallas Cowboys draft picks.
Look for the Chargers to make an impact with a solid defensive tackle or linebacker in the 2005 NFL draft, it would be the perfect compliment to this team. The Chargers do not seem to have any glowing weaknesses, but if there is a concern it is putting pressure on the passer that comes to mind. And with the NY Giants pick gaining value every week, San Diego will get to look at some top notch talent.
The Chargers would love to get their hands on Derrick Johnson, the Linebacker from Texas, but unless his stock drops dramatically, it is not likely that he will be on the board when San Diego makes their selection. But there is a very good chance that Virginia linebacker, Ahmad Brooks will still be available, he is rated to go in the top 15, but with teams placing a premium on defense, he may go much higher.
Another possible need in San Diego will be for speed and power off the defensive line, and this draft has a few names that will fit that bill nicely. Mathias Kiwanuka, the defensive end from Boston College, and Notre Dame's all time sack leader, Justin Tuck, are players that could see their value increase after the combine.
San Diego is in the driver seat in this draft, as they have the option of trading their top pick away to get some veteran help, and/or depth, and hold on to their other pick later in the round. Or the Chargers may simply decide to draft the best players available, and hold on to the assets. Another interesting scenario would be if one of the highly touted wide receivers falls down the draft board and becomes available. Although the Chargers are not lacking in offense, both Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards would make excellent targets for either Brees or Rivers.
There are three positions though that the Chargers will not draft, unless they are planning a trade. The first would obviously be at quarterback, there is little room for another blue chipper in this den. Second would be at running back, Tomlinson is just finding his groove, and his backup, Jesse Chatman has proved to be a very dangerous and capable back. Third is at corner back, Quentin Jammer is young and full of potential, there is no need to address a need there.
